Centennial College School of Community And Health Studies

When Graham Mitchell graduated from Centennial College’s Paramedic program in 1992 the job market was in the doldrums of recession. So like many freshly minted college and university graduates, he found part-time work where he could.

It was during a contract with an air medevac service in Northern Ontario that Mitchell realized the extensive role private companies play in the public health-care system. He joined two partners who together purchased Parkview EMS, a small Toronto-based firm that had formed to provide medical emergency services at local horseracing tracks.

“Public services like Toronto EMS are mandated to respond to 911 calls, which means they may leave a stadium unattended,” says Mitchell, explaining the rise of private EMS services that are now fixtures at major sports events and concerts.

They grew the business to the point where today Parkview provides emergency medical services at events hosted by the Air Canada Centre, Rogers Centre, Molson Amphitheatre, BMO Field and other facilities.

More recently, Orangeville-based Parkview found a new market in “aeromedical repatriation,” providing travel insurance companies with physicians, nurses and paramedics to escort patients worldwide, typically bringing them home for treatment in Canada, the U.S. or England after a medical episode or accident.

Mitchell credits his excellent training at Centennial College for his successful career as a paramedic – and as an entrepreneur.

Centennial’s School of Community and Health Studies is recognized for its innovation, high academic standards and faculty-led applied research in the area of healthcare and educational technology.

Since 1973, when the Ontario government transferred responsibility for nursing education from the province’s hospitals to its nursing program college, Centennial has earned an enduring reputation for its health sciences programs.

The college teaches a full range of nursing programs, including a BScN Collaborative program with Ryerson University, Practical Nursing and RPN Bridging to University Nursing with flex options, and a Practical Nursing Certificate to Diploma program. The latter allow students to meet practice requirements in Ontario or upgrade their English communication skills while preparing for advanced training.

Programs are offered at the state-of-the-art Centennial Science and Technology Centre, which opened in 2004 on Morningside Avenue just south of Hwy 401. Students hone their skills in advanced lab and clinical simulation facilities – including a fully outfitted ambulance body installed in a classroom!

Students gain valuable experience through the college’s extensive network of clinical placement opportunities at hospitals and other community facilities, while enjoying a personalized school experience.

In addition to nursing and paramedic programs, Centennial offers a range of certificate and diploma programs including Pharmacy Technician, Food and Nutrition Management, Esthetics, Workplace Wellness, Massage Therapy and related disciplines.

Working professionals can also choose from a wide variety of part-time continuing education courses delivered in the classroom or remotely.

Centennial College will afford you every opportunity to transform your interest into a satisfying career where you can make a difference – just like Graham Mitchell did. At every point along the way you have access to the knowledge, expertise and personalized attention that will allow you to become a true helping professional.

College Recruiting

All colleges have means of recruiting new students to their schools. Some use radio spots while others use mailers and even internet ads. There are numerous ways for college recruiting to take place in the digital age we currently live in.

College recruiting requires a recruiter for each school. These recruiters are responsible for luring possible students to their schools using a variety of strategies. Some are allowed to use discounted application fees for persons who have served in the military, while others play on the possibility of scholarships and tuition being paid to get new students to join their establishments.

There are some college recruiting specialists that look specifically for those students that are inclined to play on their sports team such as baseball, soccer, football and basketball. These recruiters have fallen under scrutiny the last 10 years where unscrupulous schemes were used to lure students to their schools. This includes offering money, valuable gifts and the like to get a student to sign to their school. This is generally not done on those students who have prior college experience, but those who play high school sports and are new high school graduates with dreams of playing in the pro leagues.

However the college recruiting is done, the end result desired is the same: more students attending colleges. Colleges are able to get federal funding from the government depending on the number of students that attend during any one fiscal year. Many alumni of large colleges will leave a financial endowment to the school. An endowment is money or property that is donated to the school that must be invested in the school and the principal has to stay at the school for a specific time frame. This allows the endowment to have a longer impact on the school. Recruiters have to work sometimes very hard, because many alumni will require that the student count not fall below a certain number in order for their endowment to stay intact. So college recruiting is just as fierce as the race for public office.

The colleges with the most college recruiting efforts as well as the largest endowments are Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Princeton and the University of Texas System in that order. With number one having a total endowment of over $34,000,000 it is no wonder college recruiting is such a fierce market. Getting students to agree to a college that is too close or too far from home can be a job in itself. Many high school students have not ever ventured to many other states, and to others it is attractive to move far from home to attend. The type of student the recruiter is working with will determine how hard the recruiter has to work. For students whose family is active in helping them find a college to attend, the recruiter must work very hard. Impressing the parent(s) of a student is the first step in getting them to agree to allow their child to attend the specific college.

College recruiting can take place on the campus of a college, online, through telemarketing and even in the mail box. Now more than ever students are more aware of the opportunities to go to college, and are trying to decide where to take advantage of it.

The Importance of Dramatic Play in Preschool

Anyone who walks into a preschool classroom might notice a small pretend kitchen area, filled to the brim with pots, pans, dress up clothes, pretend food, plastic cups and plates. This is what is known as the dramatic play center – an area of learning that plays an important role in early childhood education.

As a preschool teacher myself, I have often had to regulate the dramatic play center more so than others in my classroom. This is mostly because, next to the playground, it is seemingly the most popular place for children of this age to play in. Spend an hour in a preschool classroom and you too will notice that children of this age tend to flock to that center probably more than most others.

Dramatic play offers a variety of opportunities for learning and is based upon a fundamental aspect of preschool – children of this age primarily learn through play. To a child who is learning about outer space, a pretend telescope, keyboard and an old cell phone function as a command center for their space shuttle – that is about to blast off to the moon! Similarly, when learning about nutrition, children in the dramatic play center can pretend to cook a healthy meal from pretend food, and then enjoy it with their friends. Dress up clothes, wigs, hats and props offer another great treat for children in preschool. These items allow children to transform themselves into clowns, rock stars, carpenters, doctors, or police officers. There is nothing more interesting to a preschooler than to watch themselves in the mirror as they turn into different characters!

Despite the popularity amongst children, the importance of dramatic play in early childhood is probably not emphasized as much as it should be. In education nowadays, the focus tends to be more and more on reading and math, as standards become higher and expectations soar. State testing standards produce more pressure than ever on children and teachers, and this pressure is starting to surface as early as Kindergarten. As a result, preschool is seemingly one of the last occasions in a young child’s life where they can truly learn through exploration and play. It is the place where their imagination is cultivated through their creativity. As adults, parents and educators, we must be advocates for children, especially young children. To undermine the importance of dramatic play in preschool would truly be a mistake. If you have not already, spend an hour or two in a preschool classroom and you will most definitely agree.

College Jobs

Now more than ever there are more adults attending college. Some are experiencing a tumultuous time in their careers and are training for another career, while others are simply getting the education they need to begin a career. Whatever the cause, there are a shortage of jobs for those that are currently in college. College jobs are hard to come by, whether it be due to the schedule for classes or the lack of experience.

When attending school, college jobs can be found. The financial aid office at the school you attend can give you information on federal work study programs that you qualify for based on financial need. These jobs would help to pay part of your tuition, but you would also get a paycheck. If you need more than part time hours from a college job, it is best to seek employment outside the school.

For those who have prior work experience, finding a college job is less strenuous than for those with no experience in the workforce at all. For those persons who have no experience, you have to get experience somewhere. Contact your local job placement agency or temporary agency for an appointment. You will fill out paperwork that outlines the experience you have, which at this point is absolutely nil. The interviewer will ask for you to describe the kind of work you would like to have, and this is your chance to possibly get a job in the field you are studying. You will have to let them know whether you want part time or full time work, as well as the hours you are available due to school schedules. For the younger students, a personal life will have to be put on hold for the sake of having college jobs. Studying and working will take up most of the time you have outside of class, so it is important you manage your time well. The interviewer will help you find a job that will fit your schedule, should they have any companies available that are willing to accept those with little or no experience. This will probably be a factory job, or one where little skills are required so pay will not be in the highest brackets.

For those who have prior experience in the work force, college jobs will be easier to come by. The job you hold while in college is not important, as long as you finish school. If you have to take a job that you otherwise would not accept simply because you are in college, this is socially acceptable. Working at a skilled job while in college may be too much on the time constraints you will have placed on you, therefore finding a job in a local office or even doing an apprenticeship in some states will allow you to have income. Note that there are some careers that require your apprenticeship to be completed prior to or after school, and not during attendance. College jobs that are desirable are hard to come by, but they are available for those with the skill set to manage them.

DU Sets Up Quality Assurance Cell

Delhi University’s Academic Council (AC) has rejected the proposal of getting DU-affiliated colleges accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). The members of the council feel that the accreditation would ‘adversely affect’ some colleges of DU. Also, a large number of academics feel that the NAAC methodology is too general and cannot be applied to DU colleges.

“NAAC assesses colleges on parameters such as infrastructure, research, faculty, etc, and on the basis of it provides ‘A’, ‘B’ or ‘C’ rankings. Based on the rankings, a college receives grants. Colleges with lower ratings are at a disadvantage and get lower grants from the University Grants Commission (UGC),” said Abha Dev Habib, member of AC. NAAC accredits colleges on the basis of seven parameters: curricular aspects; teaching-learning and evaluation; research, consultancy and extension; infrastructure and learning resources; student support and progression; governance and leadership; and innovative practices.

Instead of the NAAC accreditation, the university has passed a proposal to set up its Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC). Although the cell would assess colleges on the similar parameters set by NAAC, the university feels that the cell will prevent from creating differences among colleges. At a time when the government is planning to set up a single regulatory body instead of multiple bodies, the rejection comes as a blow to NAAC.

“If not NAAC, we still have to go for some other quality assurance. Universities across the world subscribe to accreditations as it helps them assess their strengths and weaknesses. Delhi University’s internal cell will evaluate a college’s performance on the basis of certain set parameters,” informed Deepak Pental, vice-chancellor, DU.

Further, SK Garg, principal Deen Dayal Upadhyaya College, added, “The NAAC accreditation is meant for new institutions. But DU has several old colleges of reputation, which do not fulfill certain criteria set by NAAC. For example, some DU colleges — of high academic standard — operate from dilapidated buildings. If those colleges go for the accreditation, they are bound to be ranked low due to their poor infrastructure.”
