Jamia Hamdard is a deemed University located at Hamdard nagar, New Delhi. The history of Jamia Hamdard begins with the establishment of a small Unani clinic in the year 1906 by Hakeem Hafiz Abdul Majeed. Hakeem Majeed focused on the scientific use of Unani Medicines so that these medicines would be dispensed in a more efficacious manner to patients. He named his clinic “Hamdard”, an Urdu word which means “sympathy for all and sharing of pain”. His son, Hakim Abdul Hameed, also carried forward the philosophy and objectives of ‘Hamdard’, and dreamt of setting up an educational institution which would concentrate on highlighting the contribution of Islam and Islamic culture to Indian civilization and development of Unani medicines for curing diseases. It is one of the most reputed Universities in India.

To set up a such an educational institute, Hakeem Abdul Hameed bought a piece of land in the Tuglakabad area of South Delhi which was hardly inhabited in those times. In order to implement and execute the objects of ‘Hamdard’, Hakeem Abdul Hameed, along with his associates, established a number of institutions for teaching and research. It is one of the famous Universities in Delhi.

After independence, the institute was formally inaugurated by Late Shri Rajiv Gandhi on August 01, 1989. It was incorporated as a Deemed University by the University Grants Commission of India. Since then, a number of undergraduate, post graduate and doctoral level programmes are being offered by the institution. Jamia Hamdard is conceived as a pioneer institute of higher learning in Unani Medicine, Islamic Studies, Biosciences, Pharmacy, Nursing and other areas of knowledge. Over the last decade, Jamia Hamdard has emerged as an outstanding institution of higher learning with distinct and focused academic programmes. Graduate programme in Information Technology and Computer Applications and Post-graduate programmes in Information Technology, Computer Applications, Business Management, Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy have also been started in the last few years. Undergraduate programmes in Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy are being introduced from this year. Jamia Hamdard offers postgraduate and doctoral programmes in several disciplines for which advanced facilities are available.

The institution provides full residential facilities to its staff and students. There are 12 double-bed air-conditioned rooms, 18 single-bed air-conditioned rooms, 9 single-bed air-cooled rooms, and 4 flats with 4 air-conditioned rooms, for the scholars, University guests and members of selection board. Apart from this there are two undergraduate hostels, one postgraduate girls hostel, one undergraduate and one postgraduate hostel for boys and one International Boys hostel.

The Jamia Millia Islamia is a central university located in Delhi. It was founded in 1920 during the Khilafat and Non-Co-operation Movements, in response to Mahatma Gandhi’s call for a boycott of all Government- sponsored educational institutions, and was later registered in 1939 as Jamia Millia Islamia Society. In 1962, it was declared as an institution deemed to be a University under section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956.

In Urdu language, Jamia means ‘University’, and Millia means ‘National’ .The known freedom fighter and Muslim theologian, Maulana Mehmud Hasan, laid the foundation stone of Jamia Millia Islamia at Aligarh on Friday, 29 October 1920. Hakim Ajmal Khan was elected the first chancellor of the university, while Mohammed Ali Jauhar was the first Vice-chancellor.

Jamia was born amidst the political crisis and it was felt that it would not survive the heat of the intense political struggle for the Indian independence. It also participated in the Bardoli resolution and sent volunteers across the country to motivate people to fight for the freedom of the country. As a result, the British government imprisoned many of its teachers and students. However, after the end of the ‘Khilafat Movement’, Jamia saw itself in a great crisis. Some thought it had achieved its mission, and others believed that the institution had lost its importance with the end of the non-cooperation and the Khilafat movements. Even the university’s funds dried up. At that time, Hakim Ajmal Khan, Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed Ansari and Abdul Majeed Khwaja, supported by Mahatma Gandhi, shifted Jamia from Aligarh to Karol Bagh in New Delhi in 1925. It is one of the top Universities In Delhi.

On 1 March 1935, the foundation stone for a the new building was laid at Okhla, New Delhi. In 1936, all institutions of Jamia were shifted to its new campus. It is one of the most reputed Universities in India. The university’s basic emphasis was on using innovative education methods. Today, the university provides a large number of courses at school, undergraduate and postgraduate level. There are separate departments for Languages, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, Engineering and Technology, Law, Architecture, Dentistry and Fine arts. The strength of its faculty members is about 614, apart from 997 staff members. It has a student strength of about 10,400. Jamia not only attracts students from different parts from India but is also a favorite educational destination for a lot of foreign students too.
